At an artistic dinner in Vienna, the narrator takes stock of his own milieu.
Original title: Holzfällen

One book at a time.
Haushofer’s The Wall is a useful starting point for an intense, enclosed situation. Zweig concentrates tension into a short form, Bernhard into an angry observer’s voice, and Jelinek into difficult family and sexual relationships. Roth’s The Radetzky March follows imperial decline through generations. Musil requires a longer commitment: this selection represents volume one of the English edition, rather than the entire unfinished work.
