One book at a time.
This route combines poetry, essays, cultural history and a picture book. Teresia Teaiwa had I-Kiribati and African American ancestry, grew up in Fiji and worked across Pacific concerns. Katerina Martina Teaiwa, of Banaban, I-Kiribati and African American heritage, examines phosphate extraction and the relocation of Banabans to Rabi. Kiribati-Australian writer Marita Davies’s Teaote and the Wall introduces younger readers to life on Tarawa. These affiliations are cultural and familial and often cross present-day national borders. Last Virgin in Paradise is a play co-written by Teaiwa, also listed under Fiji. Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia is a regional anthology that includes I-Kiribati voices.
